Sri Lanka and Buddhism have been deeply intertwined for over 2,300 years. Sri Lanka is considered the oldest continuously Buddhist country in the world, and Theravada Buddhism is the religion practiced by a majority (over 70%) of the population.
According to tradition, Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Mahinda, son of the Mauryan emperor Ashoka, and Sanghamitta, Ashoka’s daughter. They played a key role in establishing Buddhism on the island. The arrival of Buddhism had a profound impact on Sri Lankan culture and society. Buddhist teachings emphasized compassion, non-violence, and the importance of monastic life. These principles helped to shape Sri Lankan art, architecture, and literature.
